Abbots Crypt

The abbors crypt located in front of the cross altar in the south nave.  Among others, the bones of five Steinfeld abbots lie here.

Under the wooden floor hatch is a cross-vaulted room with eleven chambers set into the side walls. As far as the chambers are occupied, they are closed with stone slabs.

Among others, the bones of Godefried (Gottfried) Bungenberg, abbot in Steinteld in the second half of the l4th century and Jacob Rudesheim (Rützheim) who was poisoned by fellow monks on 20 August 1416 because of his strict idea of monastic life, can be found here.

During the baroqueisation measures, most o the floor tombs in the basilica were removed, on this tomb remains. Bones were probably also reburied here.
